History of Manayunk

Manayunk was originally its own city and was referred to as the town of Flat Rock. European colonists settled here as early as the 1700s and the town boomed when the completion of the Manayunk Canal in 1823 brought the construction of numerous textile mills. It received its current name in 1824 at a town council meeting which was an anglicized version of the word “manaiung” meaning “where we go to drink”. This came as a reference to the Schuylkill River as a prominent source of water.

The area became one of the most prominent manufacturing villages in the U.S. and became known as the “Manchester of America” during that time. It played an important role in the industrial revolution in America.

In 1854, Manayunk became a part of the City of Philadelphia. The neighborhood’s reputation for manufacturing drastically changed with revitalization efforts touching storefronts and mill buildings. It managed to retain the small-town charm with historic two and three-story row homes, cobblestone paving, and hilly streets.

In the last few decades, Manayunk began to bounce back as a popular residential area as well as a social and shopping destination for Greater Philadelphia. The current close-knit neighborhood is a hotspot for millennials, young families, students, post-grads, and more looking to settle down in an area with the right mix of city and suburb.
